I'm self employed and am interested to know if there is anything like a 401K that I can use to save for retirement while avoiding taxes? Can I set up a 401K for my self or some sort of special IRA?

You may qualify for a SEP-IRA if you are self-employed. Works like a regular IRA except with higher limits (2009: $49,000). See the IRS website for more info. This can usually be established with any of the large mutual fund companies (e.g. Fidelity) or via a financial advisor.
